You probably know that establishing a regular walking habit has many positive health outcomes that include, preventing obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and it can help to keep your bones healthy and strong. But did you know walking can boost your immune system?

Moderate exercise such as walking can increase in serum immunoglobulins and cytokines which are components of your immune system that help to clear infections and induce immunity.

Regular walking can help lower the amounts of stress hormones in your body. Excessive stress is hard on your immune system and can increase the chance of illness. Having lower stress hormone levels may help to protect against illness.

Walking is excellent for older adults to boost the immune system. As we grow older, the immune system can become less active. Regular walking can help to get your immune system back in gear.

Daily brisk walking has been shown to reduce the number of days you are sick in half, but there is still some uncertainty in how exactly this is happening in the body.

If you are looking to use walking to improve your immune system, you need to take a long-term approach. If you are starting to feel sick, a walk is unlikely to help. However, if you build your health and boost your immune system by establishing a regular daily walking practice of at least 20-30 minutes, you will have a better chance of staying healthy.
