Outcome-Based Incentives

Many employers are looking at premium-based incentives for employees to take positive preventable action in managing their health care costs. Outcomes-based incentives provide employees with a financial reward for meeting a specific health target—or a penalty may be imposed for failure to meet a health standard—rather than simply providing an incentive to participate in the program.

One Walkingspree health insurance client set up Walkingspree walking program or Weight Watchers sessions as compulsory options for members whose BMI exceeded a certain target to earn their premium-discounts as offered to those members with no risk factors. Businesses that used the insurance product saved an average of 9% to 14% with the insurance program.

The maximum reward/penalty under this outcome-based incentive is increased from 20 to 30 percent as of January 2014 as a result of provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).
